On the 9th of May, we celebrate Europe Day, a celebration of peace and unity in Europe.
The date marks the anniversary of the ‘Schuman declaration’ (Paris, 1950) during which Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable.
His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of the European Union.
Below is a message from Hon. Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds.
In his message Hon. Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi emphasises on the importance of freedom of movement of individuals within European Countries. Programmes such as Erasmus+ strengthen the freedom of movement and they provide an opportunity to individuals to further their education and training abroad.
Europe Day is a day in which we celebrate all European Values. Europe which gets more people together, who work together, ensuring that we reach our common objectives.
Happy Europe Day 2020!
